File Optimization
Throughout the years, hard drive technology has become significantly sophisticated. Yet as advances have occurred, the hard drive still accesses data on spinning mechanical physical media, accessing data many times slower than the electronic memory which is serves.

File Optimization
Despite these many advances, the performance disparity between hard drive and memory yet remains, and will do so as long as magnetic hard drives are the preferred storage media. Any file optimization technology which can increase speed of access to files on a hard drive is therefore desirable—the more the increase, the more beneficial the technology.

Taking a closer look at physical volumes themselves, there are factors which can be exploited to improve performance. Within modern hard drives, there are substantial variances in access times. With many drives, optimal disk areas with faster read and write throughput rates are utilized for most frequently accessed data. Third party tools have been designed which can take significant advantage of these optimal disk drive areas for greatly increased read/write performance.

Obtaining Faster File Access

Developed by Condusiv Technologies, Intelligent File Access Acceleration Sequencing Technology, or I-FAAST, is an innovative technology that analyzes each individual drive’s performance data, and makes intelligent decisions about file placement on that drive resulting in faster file access.

These gains are obtained by, first, the running of specially engineered benchmarks on disk volumes in order to obtain data about their performance characteristics. Once this data is learned, commonly used files are placed on the disk by I-FAAST in a way calculated to maximize speed of access. In addition to those files specified by I-FAAST, users may also specify specific files that should be so optimized.

File access speed is improved by an average of 10 to 20 percent, and in some cases can be as high as 80 percent.

Over time, the drive is transparently and automatically monitored for the maintenance of performance benefits—with no impact on system resources being used. Diskeeper’s proprietary InvisiTasking technology is utilized for completely transparent operation.

New developments in I-FAAST have resulted in added functionality for the intelligent and automatic assignment of files to the optimum type of media—a physical hard drive or a solid state drive. This assignment is based on usage frequency of files and the availability of media.

I-FAAST file optimization is a unique technology which allows for faster access to commonly used files, thereby allowing users to get more done in shorter times with their computers.

“I-FAAST immediately increased my file access time better than 25% and was very noticeable.”

- Starke Donnally

“We have rolled out the I-FAAST defragmentation on all the drives on the servers, and are extremely pleased with the improvements. On average we are seeing 10-22% improvements in disk access from the I-FAAST alone, and defragmentation is taking much less time once the initial defrag.”
