Disk defrag is the process of reorganizing all the data on a hard
drive so that it is contiguous, rather than scattered in hundreds of thousands of
pieces around the drive.
When files are disorganized, stored in fragmented pieces,
the system cannot retrieve them as quickly.
The Windows operating system naturally creates file fragments every time a file
is created, modified, or deleted.
The more places the hard drive head has to go to retrieve a file that is fragmented,
the longer it will take to access that file. Accessing fragmented files substantially
slows down PC speed and performance.
Every time the computer is used, fragmentation levels increase. Left unhandled,
it will inevitably lead to PC slows, lags in performance, slow boot times, and eventually
an inability to boot up at all. Waiting a week or even a day to defrag, means the
PC is working harder and slower than it should be.

Isn't the Windows built-in defrag enough?
Even the Windows built-in defrag solution can’t keep pace with the constant accumulation
of fragmentation. One of the primary concerns with relying on the built-in defrag
solution is that it does not provide a real-time solution. When the computer is
in use, running defrag will dramatically slow performance, yet defrag must run during
After-the-fact defrag solutions, including the Windows built-in, allow system resources
to be wasted by writing fragmented files to the disk. Once a file is written, the
defrag engine has to go to work to locate and reposition the file. When the file
later expands, this doubling effort has to repeat itself—a reactive Band-Aid to
a never- ending problem.
12 offers a proactive approach, preventing degradation in Windows performance
by eliminating nearly all fragmentation from occurring at the Windows level, before
files are written in a performance-penalized state. With its patented, proactive
IntelliWrite® technology, Diskeeper keeps laptops and workstations running like
new, resulting in increased productivity and lower costs by extending the useful
life of existing hardware. IT professionals who support a fleet of laptops no longer
wrestle with persistent performance HelpDesk calls.
Where typical defragmentation utilities consume resources to operate, and deal with
the problem after the performance penalty has already been incurred, Diskeeper is
the only proactive solution that solves the problem in real-time while running transparently
in the background.
