RAID Arrays – How Can I Increase RAID Array Performance?
CPU and memory performance has increased geometrically while storage performance has lagged behind. RAID arrays have been improved to help reduce this gap but can suffer from slow performance due to file and free space fragmentation. Slow RAID array performance can bottleneck a whole system slowing your applications.

RAID Array
File fragmentation causes a file to be broken up and scattered around a volume instead of being written in one place contiguously. When this happens a large number of unnecessary requests are sent to the RAID controller.

This is where Diskeeper® performance software comes in proactively preventing fragmentation 24/7 at the Windows level. Preventing file fragmentation not only prevents the degradation in Windows performance but improves RAID array performance keeping it running at peak performance.

Solution to Increasing RAID Array Performance

A file system generates a lot of unnecessary I/Os, however, the RAID controller is unaware that the multiple I/Os are part of the same file and treats each I/O as a separate entity. This leads to RAID array performance degradation. Preventing file fragmentation at the file system level and consolidating data into a single I/O improves the performance of write and read activities.

RAID Array Performance
Preventing file fragmentation at the file system level and consolidating data into a single I/O improves the performance of write and read activities.

Diskeeper with its patented IntelliWrite® technology eliminates most file fragmentation at the Windows level improving RAID array performance without impacting storage resources.

With the release of Diskeeper 12, unused space from thin provisioned volumes on SAN and disk array storage can be reclaimed. This new Space Reclamation engine uses new thin provisioning SCSI commands to reclaim unused space efficiently on SAN devices that support UNMAP.

Diskeeper can significantly improve the performance of these RAID arrays and SAN devices. V-locity® VM accelerator does the same with VMs.

"Just as with a single disk, files stored on RAID arrays can become fragmented, resulting in longer seek times during I/O operations."
