VMware – How to Increase VMware Platform Performance

VMware® virtualization is a thorough progression in computing benefits. Such benefits include substantial reductions in hardware resources, considerable space and energy savings, and much more. Moving to cloud computing with VMware virtualization of desktops, applications and servers allows for greater efficiency and agility while retaining control and freedom of choice.

VMware Virtualization For businesses to fully obtain the service and efficiency for which virtual machines are intended, however, several issues must be addressed.

I/O bottlenecks are a regular occurrence in virtual machines, due to data in logical disks becoming fragmented. Data at the Windows operating system level is saved in a fragmented state from the beginning. Regardless of underlying hardware, the reading and writing of data requires extra I/Os. The addition of VMs compounds the situation, resulting in even slower application and storage performance.

Virtual disks can be set to dynamically grow. When they are, the deletion or removal of data by users does not cause virtual disks to shrink. Needed physical disk space is not re-allocated to other virtual systems, thus resulting in wasted disk space. The inevitable result is an increase in server requirements, plus the corresponding software licenses, network bandwidth and storage to address this inherent issue prevalent in virtualized environments. Thankfully, there is a more cost effective solution.

How to Optimize VMware Platforms

Expressly developed for virtual platform optimization, V-locity® VM accelerator is the sole solution for optimizing VMware platform performance. Requiring little to no manual intervention, V-locity 4 maximizes application I/O performance and storage utilization transparently, automatically and cost effectively.

IntelliWrite® uses proprietary technology that automatically prevents the operating system from breaking files into pieces and writing those pieces in a performance penalizing manner. Due to this proactive approach, unnecessary I/Os are eliminated, VM throughput is faster, and VMs can be consistently added with no negative performance impact. With the inclusion of IntelliMemory caching technology, V-locity 4 significantly improves virtual platform performance and I/O response time by using the RAM cache efficiently. These two performance technologies result in additional benefits including increased hardware life, increased VM density, faster application performance, reduced I/O activity, faster file access, lower operating costs and increased platform reliability.

Defragmentation contention between virtual machines is also eliminated by V-locity 4, through the utilization of V-Aware technology. On the same host server, V-Aware detects and automatically eliminates defragmentation resource contention between vitual machines. CogniSAN technology works within a shared resource system, such as a SAN, to detect external resource usage. Without competing with resources needed by other VMs within the same storage infrastructure, transparent optimization then occurs.

To eliminate wasted unused disk space, the Space Reclamation Engine offers both notification of unused drive data blocks, as well as the zeroing out of unused virtual drive data blocks for easy compaction of virtual disks. When VMware’s Storage vMotion is utilized, disk compaction can be done on the fly when virtual disk migration is performed across physical hosts.

InvisiTasking® technology means that all V-locity 4 tasks in no way impact current production. The only performance effect on users will be a positive one.

"For peak performance of Guest OSes running Windows, VMware recommends Best Practice maintenance with V-locity virtual platform optimizer, a VMReady solution." - VMware

As referenced in VMware KB article Defragmenting a Disk: "Defragmenting a disk is required to address problems encountered with an operating system as a result of file system fragmentation. Fragmentation problems result in slow operating system performance." Note: This is Guest-specific.

"We're running VMWare ESX and V-locity was deployed shortly after the purchase. I can honestly say that we have reduced our overhead maintenance by 90-95%. Introducing IntelliWrite made a great product even better. I love the fact that I don't even know it's there...these products prevent defragmentation without any performance loss."
