Data in logical disks automatically gets broken into pieces by the operating system, causing I/O bottlenecks that result in slowed performance. At the Windows operating system level, since data is saved in a fragmented state from the beginning, extra I/Os are required both for reading and writing data—regardless of underlying hardware.
Because virtual environments by their very nature, share resources, fragmentation is compounded causing unnecessary I/O performance issues, resource conflicts, application performance degradation and wasted disk space. As more VMs are added, this situation is further compounded and performance is slowed even more significantly.
Virtual disks, when they are set to dynamically grow, do not shrink when data is deleted or removed by users. This factor results in physical disk space that is not re-allocated to other virtual systems. Backup and migration times are also needlessly increased.
How Are VMs for the Cloud Optimized?
An absolute requirement for virtual machines in cloud computing is V-locity VM—designed exclusively for virtual machine acceleration. V-locity® VM accelerator increases VM performance up to 50% without the cost of new or additional storage hardware.
Through proprietary IntelliWrite® technology, unneccessary I/Os creation is stopped. This technology prevents the operating system from breaking files into pieces and writing those pieces in a performance-robbing manner. Unnecessary I/Os are eliminated, resulting in faster VM I/O throughput, and the ability to add VMs without a resulting drop in performance. IntelliMemory™ caching technology increases I/O response time by efficiently using RAM cache. Together, these two technologies effectively increase application performance, accelerate access to file data, reduce I/Os to the disk, increase VM density, increase VM platform reliability, lower operating costs and increase hardware life.
V-locity VM also eliminates resource contention between virtual machines. Within a virtual platform, V- Aware™ technology detects other resource usage and automatically eliminates contention from these resources on the same host server. Within a shared storage system, such as a SAN, CogniSAN® technology detects external resource usage; transparent optimization then occurs without competing with resources needed by other VMs within the same storage infrastructure.
Wasted unused virtual disk space is a thing of the past. IT managers can now choose to either be notified when there are unused data blocks on a virtual drive or opt to automatically reclaim allocated-but-unused data blocks, allowing for more control over virtual disk compaction and space reclamation.
Because of InvisiTasking® technology, all of the tasks performed by V-locity VM have
absolutely no impact on current production—users will only be aware of V-locity
due to the performance increase.
“I used to get constant alerts about high fragmentation before I installed V-locity.
Now I get no alerts about fragmentation. The difference is like night and day.
“V-locity is one of the best piece's of software I have ever purchased. Not only
do I not get alerts but I have noticed a better response time in the high demand
servers.”

“V-locity immediately went to work after installing it on our guest systems. Without
touching the product, other than to give the view a 'before' image of the disk utilization,
file access times and boot processes were improved within 24 hours and the changes
were noticeable to end-users."
