Server Storage Performance

There are three major areas server performance is most heavily felt: I/O latency, storage space efficiency and energy consumption. Most problems IT staff has in delivering services to users begin in one of these areas. How do I ensure server storage performance and efficiency?

Server performance problems begin on servers at the NTFS file system layer when files are not written to disk contiguously and not consolidated or otherwise optimized for efficient use. Writing and then reading these files involve many additional I/Os.

Because this inefficiency wastes system resources at its most basic production level, the file, and because of the sheer scale of read/write operations on even a small corporate server, I/O bottlenecks build up fast and create slows on all Windows servers including SAN-attached servers and SAN environments. Hundreds, even thousands of users may touch server storage simultaneously. Even the smallest inefficiencies magnify fast.
